Puff adder, Bitis arietans, a wide ranging species of venomous snake from Central and Southern Africa. The species is split into two subspecies; B.a.arietans – pictured, and B.a.somalica – confined to Somalia and northern Kenya. Due to its wide range and habit of seeking refuge in and around human dwellings, the puff adder is responsible for more deaths each year than any other snake in Africa.
