The Plains Zebra – Equus quagga is the most abundant and wide ranging species of zebra in Africa. Currently one extinct and six extant subspecies are recognized:
- Grant’s zebra Equus quagga boehmi
- Burchell’s zebra Equus quagga burchellii (includes Damara zebra)
- Selous’ zebra Equus quagga selousi
- Maneless zebra Equus quagga borensis
- Chapman’s zebra Equus quagga chapmani
- Crawshay’s zebra Equus quagga crawshayi
- †Quagga zebra Equus quagga quagga (extinct)
