Giraffes are presently grouped into one species i.e. Giraffa camelopardalis. However, recent genetic and morphometric studies have shown that there are clearly multiple species; possibly as many as eight distinct species. Until these are widely accepted by taxonomists (and especially the IUCN), they are listed here as subspecies: G. c.angolensis, G. c. antiquorum, G. c. camelopardalis, G. c. giraffa, G. c. peralta, G. c. reticulata, G. c. thornicrofti, and G. c. tippelskirchi.
